10 Months of Lenin Statues

Before I moved to Russia I had an idea. I thought it would be fun to take pictures with all the Vladimir Lenin statues I found. If you know anything about Russia, and the Soviet Union, you know they love their statues. Maybe that's a stereotype but stereotypes have some truth to them, don't they? I'm happy to report that I've managed to find 11 Lenin statues, in five different cities, in the 10 months I've lived here. I post them all on my Instagram account and use the hashtag #SelfieWithVlad. I'm excited to see what statues I will find and what new Russian cities I will visit in the next 10 months!

  2. There used to be a very famous Lenin statue in Kharkiv's Freedom Square. People always joked about him because he was pointing off in the distance... but in reality he was pointing at a bunch of public toilets :p

When all the other statues started getting torn down around the country, there was a lot of drama over him. Some people would try to protect the statue, others would threaten it. He was finally taken down in Sept 2014. You might be interested in reading about that day: http://8monthsinukraine.blogspot.com/2014/10/lenins-final-hours.html

Also, this map is probably a little out of date, but it shows where statues used to be: http://goo.gl/bHFYl2

Wishing you good luck in your quest! :) You make me wish I'd done a similar one with Taras Shevchenko statues in Ukraine!

It's never too late to take a selfie with random statues! ;) It'll be an excuse to get your husband to come back!
